Smaller portions
With GLP-1 medicines you feel full sooner and less hungry. 5 These medicines also slow down how quickly your stomach empties, which can bring bloating, fullness and nausea. 1 Vomiting is also more likely after a large meal. 1
Small and regular
- Small meals at regular times are advised; large meals and long gaps without eating are not. 1
- An example pattern: a small breakfast, then a small meal every 3 to 4 hours, with enough fluids. 1
- Emotional, mindless or late-night eating is also on the list to cut down. 1
Eating less, not skipping
With less hunger and quicker fullness, hours can pass without eating; that can mean too few nutrients, or reaching for sugary and refined food once you get very hungry. 1 Not eating because of nausea can also make nausea worse and eating even harder. 1
While you eat
- Eat slowly. 2
- Chew with your mouth closed. Swallowing air can cause bloating. 4
- Don't have a large drink with your meal. 2
- Don't lie down soon after eating; avoid eating in the 3 or 4 hours before bed. 2·3
- Don't eat a large meal late at night, and don't slouch while eating. 4
What to put in a small meal
- Add protein. Lower-volume, nutrient-dense choices such as fish, eggs, Greek yogurt and nuts are advised. 1
- Go easy on fatty and fried food, especially in the first days. 1·2
In CalJab
When you log with a photo, CalJab asks how much you ate; if you ate half, you log half. Your plan is built protein first and makes portions smaller on light days, when your own logs show you eat less; on a gentle day, recipe pages suggest a small portion.
Ask your doctor or a dietitian about your eating.
