When weight loss slows down
In the trials, weight loss is fastest in the first 6 months, slows after that and levels off at around 18 months. 1 When the medicine is continued, the lower weight was kept for at least 4 years in studies. 1 Responses vary widely from person to person, and some people lose little weight. 1
A plateau is not a reason to stop
- Long-term use: experts point out that many people do not know these medicines are meant for long-term use, also after a plateau is reached. 1
- When the medicine is stopped, up to two-thirds of the lost weight comes back within a year. 1
- Don't stop your medicine without talking to your doctor. 2
What can help
- Strength training: the Advisory suggests strength training at least 3 times a week plus at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week, to protect muscle and bone. 1
- Protein with strength training: more protein without strength training is unlikely to keep muscle. 1
- Fewer ultraprocessed foods: it recommends more minimally processed, nutrient-dense foods and fewer starch- and sugar-rich ultraprocessed foods. 1
- Less sitting: break up long periods of not moving with some activity. 3
In CalJab
When your weekly average weight stays within 0.5 kg for at least 3 weeks in a row, Body marks it as a plateau on the weight chart, and Guide shows a note on the stage card. This is only for a weight loss goal; the note is a record, not advice. Your doctor report shows your weight and your doses together.
Talk to your doctor about your dose and your goals.
